Some amazing news today, Jennifer L. Armentrout announced a SWAG giveaway for Opal, the third in the Lux Series and considering the way the previous book ended i can’t help but feel like this sweet torture! Anyway, I’m working on an ad right now (which means long hours and not nearly enough hours to sleep (and not to forget casting, the bane of my existence)) this post will have to be short. But I shall be back soon with hopefully a longer post.

Hidden (House of Night #10) by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast

I’ve really been looking forward to Hidden, dying to read actually. So having read it, I can’t help but feel a little underwhelmed. I am a huge fan of the HON series and I like the characters and the best thing about the series is that pretty much every book has a very well-paced narrative and the story progresses very steadily. This time though, that wasn’t the case. I felt that for most of the book, there wasn’t anything happening except a lot of pointless bickering (and it wasn’t even humorous what with the twins “unhappening” and all)

There were parts of the book where I felt very annoyed with most of the characters, they spent too much time just bickering amongst themselves and then also ignored some very obvious hints about some other characters. Zoey’s insecurity and self-doubt was also very irritating, she was pretty self-assured the past few books and she decides that suddenly she can’t trust what she saw through the Seer Stone? Seriously? And is it very wrong for me to miss the Twins? I get that Shaunee is finally being her own person and Erin has turned into a very evil version of herself, but I really liked their banter. It made for some very funny dialogue and they were almost the only people who could answer Aphrodite in kind (also made for some great dialogue) Shaylin is a nice addition to the mix and it was nice to see her not taking any crap from Aphrodite. As for Stark, I don’t think I ever really liked him, he’s a little too controlling for my liking (I totally agree with what Kramisha said) I always liked Heath way more and I’m glad he’s back, even though he’s not back back. I’m hoping we’ll see more of his personality emerge through Aurox. It was also nice to see Thanatos take a more active role in running the school. I was also disappointed with the way Lenobia just disappeared from the book towards the middle, it was as if the writers simply forgot about her. She was the only professor who believed and agreed with Zoey when it came to Neferet turning evil so it’s a little strange that she did not have a more active role in the events that took place towards the end. Erik appears briefly, but he’s still a jerk and I still can’t stand him.

I have a feeling that the main purpose of this book was to actually set up the last 2 books. I am a huge fan of the series and I really like the world and the very-carefully crafted and detailed mythology that the Casts have created. So I sincerely hope that the last 2 books pack a punch and are better than Hidden. While I did not hate the book (there were times when I couldn’t stop reading, especially the climax. I couldn’t wait to find out what happened), I can’t say that it lived up to my expectations.

Before I Wake (Soul Screamers #6) by Rachel Vincent

I was sucked into the world created by Rachel Vincent from the very beginning of the first book like a huge whirlpool sucks in a small boat. I’m only surprised that it took me this long to get around to reading it. I actually decided to read the series after Jus Accardo gave all the books 5 stars, which I thought was very high praise . And after having read the 6 books I can honestly say she didn’t exaggerate. I read the books one after the other so it actually felt like I was reading the Soul Screamers Omnibus, which is also why I didn’t write a review for any of the other books, I simply did not have time to write one. So this is a combined review for pretty much the whole series.

These books are just intense from beginning to end, Vincent just doesn’t let up, even for a bit. I feel like I’m gonna have a heart attack until I finish the book. Not to mention that its close to impossible to put the books down. Its usually very difficult for an author to maintain that kind of tension in every book but Vincent does it in book after book. There were times I was close to having a panic attack of my own. This is one of the few series that I read back to back, one after the other, and that sometimes becomes tiresome because either the plot becomes repetitive, or the story loses steam after being stretched beyond what it should have been and sometimes, it just becomes boring. Not so with the Soul Screamers Series. If anything, I am more obsessed now than I was when I first started the series.

Now for the characters, I love Kaylee. She is compelling, strong, selfless and yet also makes mistakes which makes her human and more relatable. And I loved the way she grew into a stronger person and became more sure of herself in Before I Wake . As for Nash, I liked him in the first 2 books but he was too nice and they seemed a little too well suited for each other for it to really last (if that makes any sense) it seemed like it was too good to be true and it was. Tod was a way more fun not to mention funny. He was also so irreverent that it was welcome given how intense the books tend to get. And I prefer Kaylee and him way more than when she was with Nash. I also love Emma; she was one of my favourite characters in the series, very lovable. SPOILER [(Which is why I still can’t believe that Vincent killed her off the second last book! Ok, maybe she didn’t die in the traditional sense, but still, it was such a shock. But I guess readers should’ve seen that coming given how many times she’s come close to dying (and died once already) and it was ingenious, the way she used Lydia. ] END SPOILER Definitely did not see that coming! Sophie is still as annoying as always though maybe not so much now than she was earlier. And Sabine is still an acquired taste. Though, I have to say that she does kinda grow on you by book 6. Then there’s Avari, a truly diabolical villain. One of the best villains I have come across in YA Fiction in quite some time.

The last book comes out next year in March, I think, and it will be nothing short of torture to wait that long. The way the story’s been building up, I’m sure the finale will most definitely be extraordinary and epic!

Deity (Covenant #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

I literally just finished Deity and Oh My God!! Could a book be more infuriating!?!?!? Don’t get me wrong, it was infuriating because it was brilliant! absolutely, mind-numbingly awesome! Without question, it is the best book in the Covenant Series so far and how the HELL does JLA even write this kind of awesome!!!

Sometimes, with an on-going series, I decide to not read the recently released book because at the end of it, I am left with a cliffhanger bad enough to give me a heart attack. I had half a mind of waiting for Appolyon to release before i read Deity but it was just too much for my self-control and eventually I caved (besides there was Elixir, so technically i did have another book in the series)(I can’t wait to get started with that, I shall begin Elixir today after I’m done rambling)

So, this book picks up almost immediately when Pure ended and Alex and Seth are spending a lot of time together, he’s helping her train among other things. I’m not going to write a summary for the book, the blurb does a good job of that. But there are a lot of things happening here and the way the narrative progresses, a lot of things become clearer. I am happy to see, that even on the third book of the series, there is a good amount of character growth. I am also glad Alex retains her awesome attitude, though to a lesser extent (what would we do without her amazing one-liners and come-backs)

Aiden is just so awesome!!! Could he possibly get any more amazing (I will know once I read Elixir 😀 ) But it is painfully obvious that he truly does love her and would literally do anything to protect her. Seth is nauseating as always. I just can’t stand him. Sure he’s hot but i can’t stand a guy who refuses to listen to “NO” when a girl says it. It was very infuriating. It wasn’t cute and and honestly, I’m surprised that Alex didn’t kick him out. Being connected to her wasn’t an excuse. Some of the older characters are back like Lea, Marcus, Deacon, Leon, etc. Lucian is as creepy as always (Yuck!!) and we meet someone we did not expect (that was a pleasant surprise)

Deity threw a number of curve balls, making it close to impossible to predict which way the story was headed and that was probably the best part. It keeps you guessing the whole time and then just as you’re thinking, “AHA! I got it!” there is a twist and again you’re left stunned. This book ends on possibly the worst cliffhanger i have read in a really long time and that just makes the wait for Appolyon that much more painful!! Elixir is more like a stop-gap arrangement to appease the readers who are still reeling from the end.

But seriously, what an awesome book. I’ll probably read it again because there were portion where i speed-read since i couldn’t wait to see what happened next. Very highly recommended. If you haven’t read the Covenant Series yet, you should start soon. You have no idea what you’re missing!! 😀
