Birds of Prey (The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn – Poster

I can’t begin to tell you how happy this poster and the title of film make me! Suicide Squad was a train-wreck of a film primarily because of everyone’s obsession with the Joker. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great villain but his ‘relationship’ with Harley is abusive and the film grossly misrepresented that.

Joker and Harley were never on an equal footing and that dynamic was toxic as hell. Sadly, the film presented said relationship as something aspirational which was also troubling.

Robbie was asked time and again about what she thought of the Joker and Harley relationship and I have to hand it to her, she made no bones about that fact that it was a toxic relationship. She had to soften her stance and her words because I think WB told her to take it down a notch.

What’s important about this film is that Robbie is producing it and has been actively campaigning to get it made. She’s got more power this time around and I love how vocal the poster is about her stand.

And she really is going the whole way, just look at this BTS still from the film

She scratched out ‘Puddin’. There’s nothing half-assed about this. And I respect her for standing by and supporting her character.  I love Harley and I want to see her come into her own, independent of any relationship. I love what she has become in the comics, more of an anti-hero than a villain’s side-kick.

My only complaint, they should have kept Poison Ivy in the film. Not as a love interest (I’m serious about wanting Harley to find her own footing first) but as a character that they could then build on and then have them get together in the sequel.

Harley is seeking emancipation from the Joker and I, for one, can’t wait to watch it.
